Parent Education : What are Our Children Doing with Their Electronic Devices?

How much do you know about : Cyberbullying ? Texting ? Electronic Addiction ?
Is the Cyber World filling most of your child's free time?
Is your child permanently attached to their electronic devices for Instagram, SnapChat, musical.ly or internet gaming?
Do you have trouble making yourself heard above the sounds of all of the electronics in your home?
How do parents keep up with the ever changing Cyber World?

What are Our Children Doing with Their Electronic Devices? The explosion of apps and social media into almost every nook and cranny of our lives is now tempting even elementary-age children. If your child does not have phone or computer, he or she likely knows someone who does. Are you savvy enough to keep them safe in the cyber world? Come join us with other parents to discuss ways to achieve a balance between screen time and family connection time. Let's learn how to limit the media habit.

Box Tops Contest Update ! Contest ends 2/28/2018!

Box Tops are still popping up everywhere! Our current contest runs until February 28th, 2018. As of today, 2nd grade is in the lead, with 1st grade behind them in second place followed by kindergarten in third place. The winning grade will receive a Pajama Day, so keep sending in those box tops!

Box Tops for Education are worth 10 cents each and are found on many products and brands such as: General Mills cereals, Ziploc, Pillsbury, Green Giant, Land O Lakes, Hefty, Kleenex, Avery, Hanes, Yoplait, Scott, Brita, Betty Crocker, and more!
How to Participate:

Little Veterinarian School® encourages preschool students to role play and explore the exciting world of veterinarians. Using interactive demonstrations, crafts and games, kids learn how to take care of a pet and use instruments that real veterinarians use. Each student will take home their own stuffed dog that they will adopt along with tape measures, dog journal, dog bone cookie cutter and so much more!

Classes:

What is in the Veterinarian’s Office? - Students learn how to measure and take assessments of their pet dog.
The ABC’s of Dog Care-Keeping Animals Healthy with Food and Water! - Students learn importance of proper nutrition and eating proper foods in keeping a dog healthy and growing properly.
Laceration - Students learn what to do when a dog gets hurt and how to care for stitches.
Sick of Ticks! - Students learn the importance of ticks and how to check their dogs for ticks. They will lean how to administer tick medicine.
The Immune System and Vaccinations - Students will learn and discuss how antibodies recognize and kill germs that enter the body.
Medical Fun and Graduation! - Students design their own Vet clinic and obtain their Graduation diploma!

Neighborhood Can Food Collection - Saturday, 02/17/2018 @ 8:30 am - Noon

Where: McCall Neighborhood
McCall's Cub Scouts Unit #6601 will be participating in the Scouting for Food program. They will be collecting can food on Saturday, 02/17/2018 @ 8:30 am am - Noon. They will walk around the neighborhood going door to door. If anyone has can food they would like to donate, please email ways@mccallpta.org so they can make sure to visit your house. Items they will be collecting includes: canned vegetables, canned soups & juices, canned meats, canned chili, boxed helper meals, pastas.

Scouting for Food is the largest food collection event in the nation. Approximately 30,000 Scouts go door-to-door collecting non-perishable food items for the less fortunate. The food is then distributed to local food pantries and assistance agencies across Circle Ten Council.

Thank you for helping scouts feed the hungry!

Volunteer of the Month (VOM) - February 2018 - Nicole Queen

The McCall PTA Board has decided to start recognizing a Volunteer of the Month (VOM) for each month of the school year. A spotlight of the Volunteer of the Month will appear in the newsletter. If you have nominations for an upcoming Volunteer of the Month please email them to volunteers@mccallpta.org.

The Volunteer of the Month for February 2018 is Nicole Queen! To learn more about Nicole and why she chooses to volunteer, please read her responses to the questions below.

How long have you been volunteering at McCall? I've been volunteering at McCall since the start of this school year, Aug 2017, when my first kiddo became a Colt! I signed up as a member of the PTA right away and couldn't wait to join the other hard-working Mama's.
Why did you start volunteering at McCall? My KG Colt means the world to me and McCall has taken care of his Spec Ed needs with more than enough energy and love and there is nothing I won't do to make sure his teachers and helpers there have the support they need from me as a Mother. I will give back in any way I can, whether it's buying fundraiser products, volunteering at class parties or volunteering my skills as a Photographer/Videographer. I do it for him.
What is your favorite part of volunteering? I have met some pretty awesome Mom's and I know I will develop many more relationships with others at the school that provides support that we need as Mothers! There's nothing that makes passing out cookies or playing games with 20 other kids more fun than doing it with a really fun other Mom who can laugh along with you! Friendships with Mama's are PRICELESS!
What is your favorite way to volunteer (event, project, etc.)? I can't pick a favorite way to volunteer. I am looking forward to helping as a chaperone at the next field trip for sure! I love having fun with the kids during parties and I am truly excited about the upcoming PTA video I'm producing along with PTA President Tricia. I am so happy that I will be able to help provide something that they can use for a few years and will hopefully really represent what PTA does for this school and what parents mean to the support the school needs. I am so thankful they brought me on board for this project and I'm looking forward to the completion and screening! PTA All the way baby!

We are starting off this amazing year with a delicious and healthy Valentine's Day breakfast for our McCall staff on Tuesday, 02/13/2018 !!!

We will be serving pastries and a Build Your Own yogurt parfait bar. If you would like to sign up and donate to our staff breakfast, please bring items to the McCall front office on Monday, February 12, 2018. Items may also be picked up by our PTA coordinator for this event if needed. Please indicate in the comment section of the sign up form if you would like the donated items to be picked up.

We are very excited to celebrate Valentine's Day with our Colts. We have games and crafts planned but we need your help with yummy snacks for the kids. We are also giving back to our community during the Valentine's Day Season by donating needed items the Plano Animal Shelter. If you are planning to attend and/or volunteer for the party, please email Ashley.Nelson@pisd.edu with your name and your child's name to RSVP by February 13th to expedite the check in process.

Volunteers: We need parents to help with setup, crafts, serve, and clean up. All volunteers are required a completed PISD Volunteer Application prior to the event.
Food*/Drinks/Plastic Ware: Please send these items to school on Wednesday, 2/14/2018 by 8 am. Please avoid nut products. Food items must be store bought. See the information on allergy sensitivities below.
Service Project : We are collecting the following items for Plano Animal Shelter until Friday, 02/16/2018.
- Kinder - 2nd : Animal Needs - Canned & dry food for dogs and cats, treats, large washable toys, dog/cat beds, flea treatments, shirt boxes, bandanas for dogs, Tidy Cats non-clumping litter, cat nip spray, & litter pans.
- 3rd - 5th Grades - Everyday Needs - Paper towels, bleach, laundry Detergent, bed sheets, pillow cases, towels, & glass cleaner

Note: There are a few students who have severe food allergies, such as to peanuts (and other nut products), eggs, and milk among other things. We are distributing this information to help you understand the situation and to help foster a safe, worry free semester for these students and his/her parents. If you bring any items into the classroom with any of these ingredients, please be sure that the products have a label on them. This will allow our students with any allergy sensitivity issues to make good choices on party day. The students’ allergies can be life threatening and the student may carry an EPI-Pen at all times. We thank you in advance for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and healthy environment for all of our students.
